Devlin had spent the night in the stable but hadn’t slept a wink. He had straw in his hair and his back was stiff. He stretched his limbs and cracked the tension out of his neck. He would have preferred to stretch out under the stars last night, but the rain kept that from happening. And sleeping in here seemed like a better choice than sleeping inside where there’d be a chance of seeing Rowan – and wanting her even more than he already did.

He gave each of the horses an extra treat with their breakfast and then decided to head out to the woods for a walk while he watched the sunrise. He wasn’t going back in the house yet. She’d be there. And she’d probably want answers for his disappearance last night.

Good luck, lassie. I’ll not be giving ye anything until ye start telling me what the hell is going on.

Devlin sulked out of the stable and hopped the fence heading to the far side of the pasture. He wanted to go to the furthest edge of the property this morn. Hearing wee movements in the grass, the Druid turned to see Fintan trotting behind him. “Och, what are ye doing out here?” Fintan stuck with Rowan at all times, ‘twas not like the fox to be out so early. The wee beastie and his wife woke up together and ate breakfast together - always.

Spoiled fox.

Fintan did nothing but keep pace with the Druid and suddenly he felt grateful to have the company. Together, they headed up to the top of the hill and watched the sun wake the earth with the warmth of a new day.

“Tis a new day just waiting for goodness to happen.” Devlin’s heart sank like a stone as he said his wife’s famous morning mantra. He didn’t believe it was so anymore and yet he’d said it anyway, as if daring the universe to prove him wrong.

One should never dangle a challenge at the Fates… they take the bait every time.
